3) Point-source pollutants in surface water and groundwater are usually found in a plume that has the highest concentrations of the pollutant nearest the source (such as the end of a pipe or an underground injection system) and diminishing concentrations farther away from the source. The various types of point-source pollutants found in waters are as varied as the types of business, industry, agricultural, and urban sources that produce them. If the facility or operator does not handle, store and disposed of the raw materials and wastes properly, these pollutants could end up in the water supply. This may occur through discharges at the end of a pipe to surface water, discharges on the ground that move through the ground with infiltrating rainwater, or direct discharges beneath the ground surface. Nonpoint-source pollution occurs as water moves across the land or through the ground and picks up natural and human-made pollutants, which can then be deposited in lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters, and even groundwater. The water that carries nonpoint-source pollution may originate from natural processes such as rainfall or snowmelt, or from human activities such as crop irrigation or lawn maintenance.

Nonpoint-source pollution is usually found spread out throughout a large area. It is often difficult to trace the exact origin of these pollutants because they result from a wide variety of human activities on the land as well as natural characteristics of the soil, climate, and topography. The most common nonpoint-source pollutants are sediment, nutrients, microorganisms and toxics. Sediment can degrade water quality by contaminating drinking water supplies or silting in spawning grounds for fish and other aquatic species. Nutrients, microorganisms, and other toxic substances can dangerous to human health and aquatic life.

This silt-laden runoff from a residential area contains not only soil and clay particles from nearby construction, but also is likely to contain small amounts of lawn chemicals, oil, grease, gasoline, and even residues from recent highway de-icing. These are all examples of pollutants released from nonpoint sources.

Chemicals:Industrial and agricultural work involves the use of many different chemicals that can run-off into water and pollute it.These are poisonous to aquaticlife and could also affects humans and birds because as we eat fish, if they are infected, in some way affects our health and our body. Some examples of these chemicals could be metals, solvents and petrol from industrial activities and pesticides from agriculture.

Microbiological:This is a natural form of water pollution caused by microorganisms such as bacterias, viruses and protozoas. The consequences are diseas that could affect fishes, humans and land animals.

Suspended Matter: These is causes because of suspended particles of pollutants that couldn t disolved on water on water. These could harm aquatic life that live in the floor of laked and rivers.

Nutrients: some wastewater and fertilizers contain high levels of nutrients that encourages the growth of different water plants like algaes. These is a problem beacause if there s so many plants they might use ol the oxygen available and not letting suffiient for fishes.

Ground water pollution:These kind of pollution is often caused beacuse of the pesticides of the soil and could provoque huge problems to humans as some use it as a source of drinking water.

Oxygen-depleting: This is origined because of the excess of biodegradable material in water. As fishes feed on biodegradable material when there is too much of it, the number of microorganisms increase and they use all the oxygen available developing like this which is called oxygen depletion. When oxygen levels in the water are depleted, relatively harmless aerobic microorganisms die and anaerobic microorganisms begin to thrive. Some anaero bic microorganisms are harmful to people, animals and the environment, as they produce harmful toxins.

Surfaces water pollution: Surfaces waters are the natural water resources of Earth such as rivers, oceans, lagoons and seas.These waters can become polluted in a number of ways giving like this place to the surfaces water pollution.

5) what can do to help. You can prevent water pollution of nearby rivers and lakes as well as groundwater and drinking water by following some simple guidelines in your everyday life.

•Conserve water by turning off the tap when running water is not necessary. This helps prevent water shortages and reduces the amount of contaminated water that needs treatment.

•Be careful about what you throw down your sink or toilet. Don’t throw paints, oils or other forms of litter down the drain.

•Try to use environmentally household products, such as washing powder, household cleaning agents and toiletries.

•Take great care not to overuse pesticides and fertilisers. This will prevent runoffs of the material into nearby water sources.

•By having more plants in your garden you are preventing fertiliser, pesticides and contaminated water from running off into nearby water sources.

•Don’t throw litter into rivers, lakes or oceans. Help clean up any litter you see on beaches or in rivers and lakes, make sure it is safe to collect the litter and put it in a nearby dustbin.


Microbiological pollution

Microbiological pollution it the pollution that cause by microorganisms. Most of them are not dangerous but they still make the water not clean. But there are some of the organism like bacteria, viruses can lead to a serious diseases that can lead to death. So that’s why some of the countries don’t have clean water to drink and lead to sickness. Real Life The faecal microbiological pollution was investigated in the Upper Great Lakes Connecting Channels (zones of the St. Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie, the St. Clair River in Samia and the Detroit River in Windsor (Ontario)) Water samples from these rivers and various sources of faecal pollution were analyzed for the indicator organism recommended by Health and Welfare Canada – Escherichia coli. Local improvements can be achieved by manipulating bacteria transport in rivers – preventing influx of contaminated waters to the areas used for water-based recreation.

Chemical pollution

Many Industrial work has to use many chemicals that can leak and get into water and pollute the water. Metals from industrial pollute the rivers and lakes. And because of that the animals that live in the water are become endangered. Petroleum is a different type of chemical by oil spills. Oil spills have a localized effect on wildlife, but can spread out for many miles. This oil can cause the death of many fish. Real Life The Yangtze River leaks most of the concern in China In January, water supplies in the southern region of Guangxi became contaminated with cadmium from a mining company. People were warned not to drink water from rivers in affected areas. There was panic buying of bottled water in some areas in Jiangsu after residents noticed a foul smell coming from the tap water Shanghai’s drinking water supply mainly comes from the Yangtze River.

An environment official has said that the city was ready to shut down water supplies from the Yangtze should the need arise. Nutrients are the things that plants need for growing and developing.Also, most of them are found in a waste water. Fish kills usually occur when more oxygen is consumed during the night hours than is produced during daylight hours. Warm water does not contain as much oxygen as cold water. Thus, during warm weather months, mismanagement of ponds by overstocking, overfeeding, overfertilization, pollution from barns and feedlots, or chemical treatment of aquatic weeds can result in oxygen depletion and fish kills.

There are more things affect earth bad and make environment polluted like wastes, plastics, smokes and much more make earth and environment polluted and difficulty. Pollution is one of thing like this Pollution make environment difficult there are different types of pollutions like Air Pollution , Land Pollution , Noise Pollution , Water Pollution , Light Pollution and Soil Pollution these all have separate effects to human body and earth with environment .

Definition of Pollution The pollution has different types of definition and meanings in different cones and different stages in science definition of pollution is The contamination of air, water, or soil by substances that are harmful to living organisms. Pollution can occur naturally, for example through volcanic eruptions, or as the result of human activities, such as the spilling of oil or disposal of industrial waste.

Water Pollution Water is most important one for earth and human livings from the beginning of earth and world in past the water was pure and clean not pollutes but now as we know the water became shortage and there are none water area we know some part of the world needed drinking water they have no water for drink and their daily using.

In this situation the water we have balance it going as pollutes and not can use there are different ways to became polluted and none useless water here I want to speak about water pollutions causes of pollutions effect of pollution and the way to keep earth and environment from pollution and the effects happened on earth , environment and human body . here are more sources for different pollution but the source of water pollution are factories , industrials , chemicals , soaps from washing car , wastes from hotels restaurants , wastes from mining mills and the wasted waters from lodges and wastes of the human livings all makes water polluted and then water happen pollution.

Causes of Water Pollution Different types of water have different way to become pollutes the water of sea become polluted by Oils from ships , Oil from spinning and Dumping of litter in the sea can cause huge problems. Litter items such as 6-pack ring ackaging can get caught in marine animals and may result in death. And the water of rivers and likes become polluted by Domestic households, industrial ,Factories , hotels , and the waste water comes from area the human lives and agricultural practices produce wastewater . and the Air pollution and the pipes going under earth became the reasons for polluting of earth and environment with water and the global warming is the main problem for water pollution because An increase in water temperature can result in the death of many Livings on water and disrupt many marine habitats.

For example, a rise in water temperatures causes coral bleaching of reefs around the world. This is when the coral expels the microorganisms of which it is dependent on. This can result in great damage to coral reefs and subsequently, all the marine life that depends on it. And there are more like Radioactive waste , atmospheric deposition , and Eutrophication. Effect of Water Pollution The polluted water effects for human body, earth and environment with different types of effects as the reasons of polluting and the area of polluting. he water from sea become polluted by the factories and industrials they avoid this polluted and used waste water to ocean and sea and the oils from ships , the oils from oil spinning’s and this effect on the livings that live on ocean and it affect humans and peoples who use the livings of oceans.

The polluted water by chemicals it become the reason for more deaths of animals birds and fishes who use to drink that water, and the more water that human uses it become polluted and it reason for diseases In order the sea food is harm full and none useless for human because of the pollution . nd the polluted water on river , likes , and wells become the reason for Air Pollution and it affect all things who lives on that area and it made More problems to environment and earth with the livings in the area. And the polluted water effect different types problems in different livings sometimes it become the reason for death of animals if they use the polluted water as we know the livings in lakes dead with the using of polluted water but the same water if use human once he may be not death but it effect more problems and diseases in human body . hen we have to keep earth and environment from polluted and waste water .

Preventing Of Water Pollution When we think to prevent against water pollution or clean our water in first we have to do against water shortage. Because there is no more water in earth for the future age then first we have to prevent the water shortage then after we have to try to clean the present and polluted water. o prevent from polluted water first we have to ensure all persons on personal mind I never pollute any water because more peoples avoid plastics , covers , wastes from home , waste from shops , waste from hotels all see the place any water area to avoid wastes like Rivers and Lakes then if it is a moving river the all wastes stop any one place and it go damage from water and after it effect in water then slowly the water became Polluting and when it become polluted the water became waste and none useless and it effect on Air then there happen Air pollution and it affect the all who use that water in any area of river while it go so we have to keep by person to keep water from polluting. The second one is we avoid the using of chemicals soaps washing powder and other chemicals we use in ourselves this chemicals effect water and it become water pollution.

Avoid dispose of toxic products, such as paints, solvents, and polishes, in the proper area. Don’t pour them down your drain. Better yet, avoid toxic products altogether and use environmentally friendly products instead. Conclusion We have to keep water from all problems and pollutions or it may effect in our future life and our livings with more diseases and more problems for human body because the polluted water have the strength to kill a live because polluting of water happen with more chemicals and other things effect more problems than chemicals like oils and paints is the reason to make water polluted so we have keep it clean or it may affect in all livings on earth.Water is a necessity to life on earth. All organisms contain it, some drink it, and others inhabit it. Plants and animals require water that is moderately pure, and they cannot survive if their water is affluent with toxic chemicals and/or harmful microorganisms. If severe, water pollution can kill large numbers of fish, birds, and other animals, in some cases killing all members of a species in an affected area. Water pollution is not only hazardous to water-bond animals it also poses as threat to humans as well.

The majority of water pollution occurs when people overload the water environment with wastes. It’s defined as contamination of streams, lakes, underground water, bays or oceans by substances harmful to living things. Such things as oil spills, boat fumes, and dumping of trash into the oceans, lakes, and rivers are just a few of the major contributors to water pollution. Throughout the past century water pollution has become a very real problem and solution must be found.

First of all, Water pollution presents problems to humans in a few ways. Water pollution makes streams, lakes, and coastal waters unpleasant to look at, to smell, and to swim in, as well as preventing us from drinking it without filtration. Fish and shellfish harvested from polluted waters may be unsafe to eat. People who ingest polluted water can become ill and if they’re exposed for a long time, may develop cancers, or have children with birth defects.

There are two types of water pollution; point source and non-point source. Point sources of pollution occur when harmful substances are put directly into a body of water (such as an oil spill). A non-point source is when pollutants enter the water indirectly through environmental changes (like when fertilizer is carried into a stream by rain).

The major water pollutants are chemical, biological, and physical materials that lessen the water quality. These pollutants can be separated into seven

different classes: Petroleum products, pesticides and herbicides, heavy metals, hazardous materials, excess organic matter, sediment, and finally thermal pollution.

The first category is petroleum products. Petroleum products include oil and chemicals from oil are used for fuel, lubrication, plastics manufacturing, and many other purposes. The petroleum products get into water by accidental spills from ships, tanker trucks, and leaky underground storage tanks. Many petroleum products are poisonous if ingested by animals and spilled oil damages the feathers of birds and the fur of animals, often causing numerous deaths among these birds, furred animals, as well as fish.

The second category that pollutants can be classified as is pesticides and herbicides. These include chemicals used to kill unwanted animals and plants. An example of this may be something used to keep certain bugs off of fruits or vegetables. These pollutants may be carried into streams by rainwater. If the chemicals in these herbicides and pesticides are not biodegradable they can remain dangerous for a long period of time. When an animal eats a plant that has been treated with certain non-biodegradable chemicals, the chemicals are absorbed into their tissues or the organs. When other animals feed on a contaminated animal, the chemicals are passed up to them. As it goes up through the food chain, the chemical becomes more harmful, so animals at the top of the food chains may suffer cancers, reproductive problems, and death. This can be a very serious problem for many species of animals.

The herbicides and pesticides found in some polluted waters don’t simple pose a problem to animals; they can also be harmful to humans. More than 14 million Americans drink water contaminated by pesticides, and the EPA estimates that ten percent of wells contain pesticides. These Nitrates can cause a lethal form of anemia called blue baby syndrome in infants. Also there are many other humans that have allergies to these chemicals, and can cause health problems if enough of the contaminated water is digested.

Other chemicals that are a problem in the pollution of water are heavy metals. Heavy metals, such as copper, lead, mercury, and selenium, get into the water from industries, automobile exhaust, mines, and natural soil. Heavy metals also become more harmful as they follow the food chain. When they reach high levels in the body, they can be immediately poisonous, or can result in long-term health problems. They can sometimes cause diarrhea and, over time, liver and kidney damage. Children exposed to lead in water can suffer mental retardation. Fish that have been exposed to mercury can be extremely poisonous to humans if they eat the fish.

The fourth classification that is known to pollute waters is hazardous materials. Included in this class are chemical wastes that are toxic, reactive, corrosive, or ignitable. If not treated or stored properly, they can pollute water supplies. Such as in other categories once the hazardous wastes reach one part of the food chain they can be passed on to the animals that depend on them for food.

The fifth leading cause of water pollution is excess organic matter. Some examples of excess organic matter are fertilizers and other nutrients used to promote plant growth on farms and in gardens that may fine their way into water. At first the nutrients will help the plants and algae in the water grow, but when they die and settle underwater, microorganisms decompose them, while decomposing them the microorganisms take in oxygen that is dissolved in the water. The oxygen levels in the water may drop so low that fish and other oxygen-dependent animals in the water suffocate, and die, this happens mostly in the Midwest and other such places where there are vast amounts of farm land.

Yet another principal cause of the pollution of water is sediment. Sediment is soil particles carried to a stream bed, lake, or ocean, if in large amounts, can also be a pollutant. Soil erosion can damage a stream or lake by adding too much nutrient matter. Sedimentation can also cover stream bed gravel where many fish lay their eggs. Therefore, this can greatly decrease the population of fish in future generations. This is one of the many reasons that soil erosion is trying to be prevented today.

The final cause of water pollution, which is often overlooked, is known as Thermal water pollution. Thermal pollution takes place when water is taken from rivers, lakes, or the ocean to be used in factories and power plants. This water is usually returned to the source much warmer than when it was taken. Even a small temperature change in a body of water can drive away the fish and other species that were usually inhabited that particular region, and in conjunction attract other species in place of them. This develops unwanted ecosystems in areas where they should not be. Thermal pollution can speed up the biological processes in plants and animals and/or lower the oxygen level in the water. Fish and other wildlife near the discharge source, may die.

So as you can see, water pollution is a very serious problem it is responsible for dramatic decreases of fish and wildlife populations in our, rivers, lakes, and oceans. Water pollutants should also be held accountable for many cases of food poisoning, especially experience in seafood. In order to solve this problem we need to learn about ways for disposing harmful household wastes so they don’t end up in sewage treatment plants or landfills. In our yards, we should determine whether or not we need to add nutrients before fertilizers are applied, and look for alternatives where fertilizers may run off into surface waters. We need to preserve existing trees and plant new trees and shrubs to help prevent soil erosion. Around the house we should we need to keep litter, pet waste, leaves, and grass clippings out of gutters and storm drains, and buy as many heavily packaged foods, certain boxes, cartons, bottles, etc that are made with polluting dyes.

On a more widespread note, we must be much more careful about the types of pesticides we use, how we transport oil and other harmful materials, and work as hard as we can to prevent soil erosion and excess organic matter. If everyone works together to prevent water pollution this problem can be decreased drastically, if not eliminated. We all depend on water as a part of everyday life, we simply need to make sure that we as humans don’t take this for granted, and take every step possible to keep the waters on this Earth as clean as possible.
